Pyramids

Pyramids were tombs. No one alive lived in the pyramids. But pyramids might be used by the priests on their flat tops.

Some cities had many pyramids. Some had steps the priests could climb, to bring them closer to the heavens and their gods. They had to climb quite a ways. Some pyramids were 200 feet high! Some had flat roofs where ceremonies, conducted by the priests, could be held. Some pyramids were built with traps to catch the unwary. If you did not know where to step, you could be in a lot of trouble. Archaeologists have to be very careful when exploring the ruins of a Maya pyramid.
